CONCRETE REPAIR

    CONCRETE REPAIR AND PROTECTION
    RODRÍGUEZ ROS

Rodríguez Ros has implemented the reinforced concrete repair and protection principles at the heart of its organization through adequate training of its staff. Rodríguez Ros is a Sika-approved Applicator for concrete repair and protection.

    REPAIR OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES

The types of damage and their main causes are well known, and methods have been established to ensure a correct repair and protection, which are presented in the 11 Principles of standard UNE-EN 1504, part 9.  This allows Rodríguez Ros technical specialists to correctly repair and protect all potential damages that arise in reinforced concrete structures.

Principles 1 to 6 define the defects in concrete itself; Principles 7 to 11 define the damages due to corrosion of reinforcements. The European Union introduced the compulsory Standard UNE-EN 1504 on January 1st, 2009, and Rodríguez Ros has followed the guidelines established in such standard. These standards define the required evaluation and diagnostics works, the necessary products and systems, including their behaviour, alternative procedures and application methods, along with the quality control of both materials and works.

For concrete repair work, fall arrest systems are often required. For this reason, at Rodríguez Ros we offer an installation service for lifelines and safety at heights.

    GUIDELINES FOR
    CONCRETE REPAIR

Concrete structure analysis: Rodríguez Ros conducts sonic testing to evaluate existing damages. When evaluating the condition and strength behaviour of a structure, Rodríguez Ros conducts thorough examinations and conducts a detailed diagnosis of existing damages:

    • State of cracking.
    • Degradation of materials: carbonation, chemical attack, sediments, efflorescense, etc.
    • Corrosion, depressions.
    • Anomalies: salients, joints, excessive deformation

Several techniques are used for the analysis: Sclerometric index or rebound index UNE 83-307-86. Ultrasound passage speed UNE 83-308-86. Pull-off test (Pull-off test). In order to be able to apply a surface repair process, the average value of the results obtained from this test must be greater than 1.5 N/mm2.

To determine the carbonation index of the concrete in accordance with the RILEM CPC18 recommendation, the depth of carbonation is tested by spraying a fracture surface of the concrete in-situ with a 1% solution of phenolphthalein in 70% ethyl alcohol. The non-carbonated area of the concrete, with a high pH, undergoes a change in colour and a very visible magenta shade appears. Therefore, the carbonated area can be detected as the area that, after spraying, remains unchanged in colour. The shift occurs for pH below 9.2.

Mechanical attack (impacts, overloading, movement, vibration, earthquakes, explosions…). Chemical attack (alkali-aggregate reactions, aggressive chemical exposure, biological and bacteriological action, efflorescense and seepage, etc.). Physical attack (frosting-defrosting, thermal changes, salt crystallization, retraction, erosion, abrasion and wear, etc.).

Re-calculation of the structural capacity, which is likely addressed to reducing the function of the concrete structure. Prevention or reduction of the future deterioration without improving the concrete structure. Improve, strenghthen or partially or fully clean the concrete structure. Full or partial reconstruction of the concrete structure. Full or partial demolition of the concrete structure

Rodríguez Ros selects the Principles and Methods of Repairs and Protection and the required levels of performance of adequate products are defined according to Parts 2 and 7 of UNE-EN 1504 and Part 10: Application of Products and Systems and Quality Control of Products. It is important that all evaluation and specification work not only take into account the long-term performance of products, but also that the proposed repair materials do not adversely react physically or chemically with other products or systems or with other concrete structures. Rodríguez Ros executes the works with products and systems that conform to UNE-EN 1504.
